Published on Eat This, Not That! on December 22, 2019, this article by Michael Martin highlights common bacteria hotspots and offers practical hygiene tips.
- Gyms and Fungal Infections: Dr. Todd Minars, MD, of Minars Dermatology warns that gyms are major breeding grounds for fungal infections. Gym-goers frequently place cell phones in contaminated treadmill holders and handle them uncleaned post-workout. Dr. Minars highly recommends using the facility’s sanitizer wipes to clean your phone completely after exercising and bringing a personal exercise mat from home.
- Technology: Cell phones, keyboards, and mice trap massive amounts of bacteria. Disinfect them regularly with an isopropyl alcohol mix or wipes.
- Public Surfaces: Door handles, ATM keypads, and elevator buttons are highly contaminated. Press them with a knuckle and use hand sanitizer.
- Shopping: Grocery carts, freezer handles, and checkout belts harbor disease-causing bacteria. Always wipe down shopping cart handles.
