BOTOX® Cosmetic Vs Restylane®

Patient’s are surprised!
Most people know that both Botox and Restylane are used to treat wrinkles, but they do not know that they are used to treat different wrinkles. So they are surprised when they point to a line on their face and say “I would like to treat this wrinkle with Restylane.” Only to hear me reply, “That wrinkle is treated with Botox”.

A good rule of thumb: We use Botox® to treat lines on the upper half of the face; and Restylane to treat lines on the lower half of the face.

How they work
Botox® is a “relaxer”. The units of Botox are used to treat wrinkles that are caused by muscle movements that fold lines into the skin. For example, the frown line between your eyebrows, the forehead lines, and the “Crow’s feet” around the eyes.

Restylane is a “filler”. We use it to treat wrinkles and folds that are caused by gravity and loss of volume. Restylane replaces the lost volume by filling in the wrinkle, plumping it up. This often results in a “lifting effect”.

Which one lasts longer?
Restylane lasts longer. It typically lasts for a year (but even after the Restylane is gone, patients still often look better than their “before” photos – probably because the procedure has stimulated production of their own collagen.) But remember, these are totally different treatments for totally different lines and wrinkles.

An interesting fact about Botox
The longer you use it, the longer it lasts! The first time you have a Botox® treatment, it will probably last about three months. Subsequent treatments with Botox® will last longer because the muscle “learns” not to make the wrinkle (even for a time after the BOTOX has worn off). To maintain the effects of Botox®, plan on three treatments a year. However, after eighteen to twenty-four months of maintenance, many of our patients only require treatments twice a year. These are usually patients who have their “frown lines” (between the eyebrows) treated and is less common for our patients who are treating their forehead or Crow’s feet.

Does Botox® prevent wrinkles?
Yes.

Does Restylane prevent wrinkles?
No.

Some people are not good candidates for either treatment
Certain people have lines that simply do not lend themselves to treatment with Botox® or Restylane. Sometimes it is the location of the line, and sometimes it is because the line is too “etched” into the skin for either treatment to effect. How do you know if you are a candidate?
