Common Pediatric Skin Conditions

_minars common pediatric skin conditionsAt Minars Dermatology, we are a Hollywood dermatologist clinic who sees pediatric patients as well as adult patients. We often get asked about common pediatric skin conditions. Many of the childhood rashes and skin problems that children and adolescents experience are well within the scope of general dermatology. Some of the most common concerns we see in children include eczema, acne, molluscum contagiosum, warts, and dermatitis.

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is by far the most frequent condition among young children. This chronic inflammatory skin disorder often starts early in life and is characterized by dry, itchy, and red patches. Infants typically develop eczema on the face, especially the cheeks and scalp, while older children and teenagers usually experience it in the skin folds, such as behind the knees, inside the elbows, and around the neck. In children with darker skin tones, eczema may appear as areas of discoloration, either lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, which can sometimes be confusing to parents.

The hallmark symptom of eczema is intense itching, often so severe it disrupts sleep and causes discomfort throughout the day. Sometimes itching may start before the rash appears. Eczema tends to be part of an “allergic march,” often appearing in children who also have asthma, hay fever, or other allergic conditions.

Teenage Acne

As children enter their teenage years, acne becomes one of the most common reasons for dermatology visits. Hormonal changes during puberty increase oil production and contribute to clogged pores, resulting in pimples, blackheads, and sometimes cystic lesions. Acne in adolescents can be distressing and affect self-esteem, so proper treatment and guidance are key.

Other Common Pediatric Skin Issues

Molluscum contagiosum, a viral skin infection that causes small, flesh-colored bumps, is very common in children and typically resolves on its own, though sometimes treatment is recommended. Viral warts, caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), can also affect kids, particularly on their hands and feet.

When to See a Dermatologist for Pediatric Skin Conditions

Many common conditions (especially childhood rashes) can be managed by the pediatrician. Conditions that do not improve or those that are widespread or worsening should be evaluated by a dermatologist familiar with pediatric skin conditions.
