On becoming a Dermatologist…
I decided to become a dermatologist for many reasons. My dad (Dr. Norman Minars) never pushed me in that direction – he let me come to it on my own. I originally thought about being a surgeon (like every med student) or an ICU doctor (I liked the science of the ICU) but dermatology fit my personality best. In a single clinic day one can see infants to 90 years olds, be challenged to diagnose a mysterious rash, and perform simple surgeries. I also like that most of things we diagnose are not serious or life-threatening and are very amenable to simple treatments. I like being able to say “Its ‘only’ a skin cancer. We can treat it with a simple in-office procedure and it will have no affect on your health otherwise.”
