Leukoplakia

a clinical term;  used to describe a wide range of non-specific white lesions
causes:  smoking (most common), chronic irritation from carious teeth or malaligned dentures
histology:  ranges from mild epidermal thickening to varying degrees of dysplasia or carcinoma (SCC ~ 17%)
clinical does not correlate well with histology, therefore biopsy all (simply follow if benign histology)
ddx:  candidiasis, LP, habitual cheek biting, white sponge nevus, secondary syphilis, oral hairy leukoplakia

Miscellaneous:

Leukemia cutis: (AML) (M4 and M5 are more likely to involve skin and gums?) (i.e. monocytic (vs. myelogenous) are more likely to produce oral lesions)
