topical glucocorticoid use is suspected etiology in:
| • | granuloma gluteale infantum |
side effects:
| • | osteoporosis (all patients should get Oscal-D) |
| • | decrease production of collagen and ground substance |
| • | dermal atrophy tip - use of lactic acid (Amlactin cream or Lacyhrin cream) with topical steroid use decreases/counteracts atrophic side effects, striae, purpura |
| • | augment the effect of androgens on the pilosebaceous unit |
| • | steroid acne, mild hirsutism |
Vasoconstrictive assay:
| • | a measurement of the ability of steroids to induce vasoconstriction or blanching of the skin |
| • | the most frequently used method of estimating relative potency of topical steroids |
| • | parallels results found in clinical studies and is much easier to do |
less “allergenic” topical steroids (i.e. no preservative or fraqrance):
| • | ointment – Hytone, Synalar, Diprosone, Lidex |
| • | foam products – Olux, Luxiq |
Topical Steroids Misc:
| • | Elocon and cutivate almost no systemic absorb therefore no axis suppress |
| • | Add sal acid to steroid to increase penetration |
