A "classic presentation", usually at the end of the visit as you are walking out the door ("One more thing doc, my hair is falling out").
Physical exam:
| • | frontal thinning? androgenetic alopecia |
| • | monk's fringe? trichotillomania |
| • | seborrheic dermatitis? treat it |
| • | hirsute or acne? androgenic alopecia |
History:
(and labs only if the history suggests it will be fruitful)
| • | androgenetic alopecia - family history? |
| • | androgenic alopecia - irregular menses, acne, hirsute? |
| • | telogen effluvium - recent surgery, trauma, procedure, pregnancy, hospitalization? |
| • | medication side effect - examine med list big three: coumadin, retinoids, prednisone |
| • | thyroid - weight change? GI symptoms? temperature symptoms? mood? |
| • | diet? (fad diet, vegan, eating disorder, alcoholic?) |
