organism Treponema pertenue
primary lesion = “Mother yaw”  - a papule that ulcerates and becomes granulomatous
secondary lesions called , “Daughter yaws” are smaller versions of the primary lesions
late non-contagious stage months to years after primary infection, gummata develop in the skin and bones

 

Non-venereal treponemal infections

= Pinta and Yaws
spread by direct contact
predominantly a disease of  underprivileged children
both diagnosed clinically and by reactive serologic tests for syphilis
