• | aphthous ulcerations are common in patients with IBD, are thought to represent an autoimmune reaction |
• | in IBD patients, the lesions occur only on mucosa not bound to periosteum |
characteristic of Crohn’s:
• | linear ulcerations of the buccal vestibule, a cobblestone appearance of the buccal mucosa, swelling of the gingiva and lips |
• | biopsy of these lesions of the lips show non-necrotizing granulomatous inflammation |
Cutaneous Crohn's disease:
• | AKA metastatic Crohn’s disease (= no direct connection to gut) |
• | often umbilicus or groin region |
• | all have granulomatous histology |
