Follicular Occlusion Triad
| 1. | hidradenitis suppurativa |
| 3. | dissecting folliculitis |
| • | all three represent chronic, recurrent, deep-seated folliculitis resulting in abscesses and followed by the formation of sinus tracts and scarring |
Similar pathogenesis:
| • | common initiating event appears to be follicular hyperkeratosis (leading to retention of follicular products) |
| • | primary etiology of theses conditions is not bacterial (unopened abscesses are culture negative, though frequently become secondarily infected) |
Similar histopathologic findings:
| • | early: follicular hyperkeratosis with plugging and dilatation of the follicle |
| • | at first little inflammation but eventually a perifolliculitis develops |
Chronic Deep Folliculitis
| • | folliculitis (acne) keloidalis nuchae |
Histopathologic findings:
| • | early: perifollicular infiltrate of neutrophils etc… |
| • | develops into perifollicular abscess --> destruction of hair follicle |
