dysplastic nevi serve mostly as a marker for patients who are at an increased risk of developing melanoma
•
most melanomas that occur in these patients will arise on normal appearing skin
•
take a family history of melanoma to stratify risk
•
if positive family history, then examine every 3 to 6 months
excise lesions with:
•
very atypical morphology
•
change
•
difficult to follow clinically (e.g. scalp)
