Side effects are minimal and usually limited to a sunburn-like redness and some mild swelling which disappears in a few days. Within 24 hours, new epidermal skin will develop and your skin will have a bronze appearance which can last from three days up to two weeks depending on what level of treatment you have received. As the new skin replaces the treated skin, it will flake off. Emollients (i.e. moisturizers) can counteract some of the flaking effect. Results - Our Usual Candidness We began treating patients with the Fraxel Laser in August of 2005 so we can only begin to personally speak about the results. Dermatologists who we trust (i.e. those not employed by the company) have given this technology rave reviews. What we can say is that patients who have completed one or two treatments have been very happy. And we have had to add a second date each month for this laser due to its growing popularity. In addition, two of our staff members are being treated (Beverly for fine lines and a scar, and Frances for melasma and photodamage). Feel free to speak with either of them.
The New "Gold Standard" For Acne Scars
After using this laser for 10 months we agree with the general consensus, that this is the new "gold standard" for the treatment of acne scars. Not all acne scars will respond well to this laser. The Fraxel can significantly improve undulating or "saucer-like" acne scars. These are scars that are wider than they are deep. On the other hand it seems to do little for "ice-pick" scars. These are tiny deep holes that look like they were made with an ice pick.
The Price The price of the treatment will increase as we gain more experience with this laser and can personally attest to the results. We want our patients to have access to this technology because it is a safe alternative, and it is supposed to be very effective. But we do not want them to pay full price until we can personally stand behind the claims made about this laser. Our first few patients were treated at cost. Currently we charge $850 to $900 per treatment. (A typical patient requires a series four treatments spaced two to four weeks apart).
We are currently treating patients with Fraxel for the following conditions
Wrinkles
Acne scars
Photo damage
Poor texture
Large skin pores*
Melasma
* Note - I have yet to find any treatment that consistently reduces patient's pore size
