Juvederm vs. Radiesse vs. Restylane...how do I choose?

With more choices comes more confusion. The following is a guide to help you choose.

Safety and track record -
Ultimately, all of these fillers are approved by the FDA for use in the United States, and the FDA has very high standards. To give you an example, the rest of the world (including Canada and Europe) had been using Restylane for almost ten years on almost a million patients before the FDA allowed doctors in the United States to inject Restylane. The newer fillers (Juvederm and Radiesse) have taken much less time to be approved. So as far as safety is concerned, the FDA considers all three to be safe, but Restylane has the longest track record and the most people injected worldwide, by far.    The only stain on Radiesse's record occurred in patients who had the product injected into the lips. Some of them got lumps because of the nature of the muscular anatomy of the lips, therefore Radiesse is not approved for and should never be used in the lips. Juvederm has not been out as long as Restylane but it is a very similar product (both are cross-linked hylaronic acid). Safety Winner = a tie (Restylane and Juvederm) Track Record winner = Restylane.

Longest lasting - The clear cut winner here is Radiesse. There is data to show that this filler lasts one to two years. Restylane last 7 or 8 months in most of my patients although I have had several patients with corrections lasting more than one year. Juvederm is new, but it should have similar properties to Restylane because it is made of the same material (cross-linked hyaluronic acid) Winner = Radiesse.

Least bruising and least pain -
Let's start with the product that has the most down-time and pain - Radiesse. You will get more bruising and it is somewhat more painful to have Radiesse injected because the material requires a larger needle and the injection technique is a little bit more traumatic. The smoothest material to inject is Juvederm.   Winner = Juvederm.

Most natural correction -
They are all pretty natural looking, but Juvederm is the smoothest.   Sometimes, especially if you have never had a filler injected, you will be aware of it after the procedure for several weeks. You may even be able to feel it with your finger (or with your tongue from the inside of your mouth). Although you may feel it, you will not see it.   Winner = Juvederm.

You should use Radiesse if...
You desire the longest correction possible with an FDA-approved filler.
You don't mind more downtime (bruising) with each procedure because you will have to do the procedure less often (it lasts longer!)
You desire facial contouring (such as enhancing cheek bones) in addition to filling in wrinkles and folds.

You should use Juvederm or Restylane if...
You are new to fillers
You want to include your lips as part of your treatment
You desire less downtime, less bruising and less pain with the procedure
